Marketing Today
First, lets start
with what marketing is...
Marketing distinguishes the differentiating qualities
about your product, than that of your competitors.
Articulating that information is the first step of your
success. If you are lucky enough to have a first mover advantage (#1
on the scene before you have any competition), you have first mover
advantage. Marketing is also defined below:
Marketing (traditional), as suggested by the American
Marketing Association is the process of planning and executing the conception,
pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to
create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives.
Marketing, as suggested by the American Marketing Association, is "an
organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating
and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships
in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders".
Philip Kotler, in his earlier books, defines marketing as: "human
activity directed at satisfying needs and wants through exchange processes".
Still another marketing definition, coined by Brian Norris: "The
process of repeatedly moving people closer to making a decision to purchase,
use, follow, refer, upload, download, obey, reject, conform, become
complacent to another person's, society's or organization's value. Simply,
if it doesn't facilitate a "sale" then it's not marketing."
So the object of marketing is making your product stand out above all
others to make the sale. Seems pretty self-explanitory, but is it easy?
NO! Today, try to come up with a product. Within one month, there will
certainly be a plethora of competition. Why is that? Well, we can attribute
most of it to the internet. The very icon of the latest gadget we all
must utilize. But, at the same time, it spreads information...especially
to your competition everywhere within moments.
- Take that water bottle you have near you. What are the features
of it that market?
Is it easy to grasp without slipping? = Marketing
- What color is it? Blue? Yes. Why? Because when you look at it
you think of cool refreshing clean water. = Marketing
- Does it fit in your car cup holder? Yes? = Marketing again
Do you see what I am trying to say? If you think you just randomly
chose something...think again. Billions of dollars are spent every year
on marketing. Why? Because we all want to be number one in our field.
We all want our product to be the one you always think of. We want you
to buy us!
